VITL is proud to support the Vermont Department of Health’s WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program as it expands access for families in rural areas. A key part of making this successful is ensuring that health care providers and public health teams can securely access and share health data. By providing secure, real-time access to participant data through VITLAccess, the WIC program can offer remote appointments while maintaining high standards of care and data integrity.
Virtual appointments allow WIC to better reach families in rural communities where transportation and scheduling can be barriers. As reported in the Hardwick Gazette, the transition to remote WIC appointments—first implemented during the COVID pandemic—has significantly increased access and participation in the WIC program. VITL helps make this possible by ensuring that WIC staff can easily access the health care information they need to support families, whether appointments happen in person, by phone, or through hybrid outreach methods.
“WIC services have become even more accessible thanks to innovations like VITLAccess,” said Kristina Weekes, Director of WIC for the Vermont Department of Health. “We’re better equipped to serve families who might not otherwise be able to participate in the program.”
Through VITL, WIC staff can quickly view a participant’s information, reducing administrative burden and helping ensure continuity of care—whether a family is seen in a clinic, over the phone, or at a community location, like a local Head Start center. In rural regions, where staffing and infrastructure challenges can limit service delivery, tools like VITLAccess have become essential.
This partnership is among the ways VITL is supporting the good health of Vermonters by helping programs like WIC deliver equitable, efficient, and family-centered care.
