Healthcare Integration Engineer

VITL is seeking a Healthcare Integration Engineer to design, build, and operate data pipelines and interoperability services for the Vermont Health Information Exchange (VHIE). The engineer will work across the full data lifecycle, from ingestion through normalization and persistence to downstream access via APIs and analytics platforms. This role requires a solid programming background and hands-on experience working with health data integration engines and cloud-based API platforms in support of modern interoperability initiatives.

Principal Responsibilities

Data Pipeline Engineering

  • Design, build and maintain scalable HL7 v2/v3, C-CDA, and FHIR health care data pipelines.
  • Configure channels, transformers, filters, and message routing within integration engines such as Rhapsody or Mirth.
  • Implement transformation, normalization, and validation logic in support organizational data quality standards.
  • Ensure data pipelines support identity resolution (MPI), consent management, and align with data access and sharing policies.
  • Develop and run test cases to validate changes and document test results for audit and quality assurance.

Operational Reliability and Monitoring

  • Monitor data pipeline health, data integrity, and system performance in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Support remediation of issues related to data ingestion, transformation, and transmission.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize integration processes and workflows to improve efficiency and data quality.
  • Contribute to observability processes by implementing centralized logging, monitoring, alerting, and auditing capabilities.
  • Automate processes with internal and external stakeholders by integrating with ticketing tools (e.g., Salesforce, Jira).

Data Quality and FHIR-Based Interoperability

  • Design integrations in alignment with healthcare data standards, including HL7 implementation guides and FHIR profiles.
  • Support FHIR resource modeling, data mapping, and query optimization.
  • Support FHIR API driven data submission and access patterns.
  • Work closely with data quality and governance team members to ensure data is fit for operational, clinical, and analytic use cases.
  • Collaborate to identify data anomalies, gaps, and improvement opportunities.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in technical working sessions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Document technical designs and implementation details in support of organizational knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to the evolution of interoperability services that are aligned with national standards.
  • Evaluate evolving tools and best practices to improve scalability, maintainability, and performance of the data pipeline.

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with healthcare data integration using HL7 v2/v3, C-CDA, and/or FHIR, including interface engines such as Rhapsody or Mirth
  • Proficiency in scripting and data processing using tools such as Python, SQL, and working with XML/JSON data formats
  • Experience with APIs, cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS), and modern observability tools (logging, monitoring, alerting)
  • Understanding of interoperability concepts including clinical terminologies, data exchange protocols, and secure authentication methods (e.g., OAuth2)
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills to resolve technical issues and improve data accuracy.
  • Understanding of healthcare privacy and security regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all work.
  • Team player who values diverse perspectives and collaborative problem solving

Location

The VITL team is currently working remotely. The ideal candidate will live in Vermont and be available for in-person meetings. However, this position can be performed remotely by a candidate willing to travel as necessary. All VITL employees must live in and work from the United States; VITL’s preference is someone located in the Eastern or Central times zones.
